I'd love to see some of the size and weight comparisons and photos of some of the different options out there. Can you turn just about any rc plane into an first person view (FPV) flyer or are there some definite winners out there to work with?

I agree Scotty! I remember flying my indoor electric plane at Aaron's old hanger and the prop assembly was it's weak spot. Too many people demo flying and crashing into one thing or another and it just started to lose it's front end symmetry and the prop started to go.

So after storming on this project for
12 hrs now, my thoughts are changing in some ways and the same in others. My first pictures that came to mind were tractor setups but considering the space to be flown in, for durability sake, a layout that offers a degree of protection for the prop is in order.
The airfoil/planform combo remains the choice for me, however a lighter construction method than 1mm depron plank would be good so I'm considering some film options.
As far as look goes, it's going to be challenging to come up with somthing unique that still performs in these perameters.
This promisses to be a fun and rewarding project for all and I'm sure some very cool stuff will come from it.
Stay tuned....

I have to agree with you Krefi. If given the option, I would much prefer to build the entire model myself. However, since the model was provided partially pre-built, I attempted to build the model like they had intended. If I had found any screws without threadlock, I would have torn down the entire machine. I did find it frustrating certain parts needed to be disassembled regardless to finish assembly, such as the servo mounts.

With regards to thread-lock on the pre-assembled bits: do I understand correctly that your approach was to take a random sampling of screws to check for threadlock, and once satifisfied that your sample was locked, you stopped short of tearing everything and rebuilding it? I wish manufacturers could inspire more confidence with these assemblies and other things like ARF kits. I find the prospect of the teardown/rebuild chore quite frustrating, and it's one of the reasons I chose a Mini Titan kit that I could build from the bottom up from the get go.

Probably the most likely reason they shot it down, as you said (and personally I agree with this one), was to avoid having the thing getting into enemy hands.

Although another idea comes to mind.

If you had lost control of a drone, carrying high powered weapons in a hostile area. There is the possibility of running into a terrorist with the brains to take control of the thing and turn it against your own troops. And therefore, you'd want that thing out of the sky as soon as possible.

Does this idea hold any water? Not really, but back around the start of the year, one of our drones was shot down in Afghanistan by an SAM. They still haven't found it. Reverse engineering?
