Thunder Tiger Soon To Release Torque Tube Upgrade For Mini Titan

dsc_0342-mediumThunder Tiger has one of the most flexible 450 designs on the market, and their latest upgrade for the Mini Titan has the potential to unleash the beast within. Thunder Tiger already has two great looking scale options for the Mini Titan, a Super Cobra body with a raised tail, and an Agusta A109 body with wheels. It was apparent during my build of the Super Cobra body (click here to see the review) that Thunder Tiger had planned for all kinds of future upgrade options when they originally designed the Mini Titan. Now, Thunder Tiger is gearing up for the release of a torque tube gear drive upgrade kit for the Mini Titan that should really open up the performance envelope. Torque tube or shaft drive tail systems are common on high performance helicopters; they tend to be more susceptible to damage, but decrease drive train drag and tighten up power delivery for super crisp performance.

There is no specific information yet on when this product might be available, but my Mini Titan SE is sitting here anxiously awaiting this upgrade. Its performance is very good, but the tail cannot keep up with the rest of the helicopter. I am using a Futaba GY 520 gyro with a Futaba S9257 digital tail servo. The performance is good, but the tail does load up and blow out when I get into hard right handed piro maneuvers. Some of the issues could be traced to some slop in the tail pitch mechanism, but the belt drive tail has to be run fairly tight to get good performance out of the tail. Going to a torque tube should free up more power, and make the tail performance much more crisp and locked in; both of which will make the model more capable at handling today’s aggresive 3D flying.
