Sunday, September 20, 2009, Brooks, Oregon- Despite the rain that pestered the event, Sunday turned out to be gorgeous! It was slightly breezy, and right before the end of the day my poor Pop up shade canopy blew away like a giant tumbleweed. It survived a little more than a year of rigorous fun fly use, and was in very good shape before the incident. The pilots prizes were given away, I came away with a new pair of digital calipers. I spent the rest of the afternoon actually getting some flying in.
Last night, I pulled the engine out of my Sceadu and put a new clutch on it. I was not thrilled with how the Sceadu felt, nor was I very happy with my Logo 600 V-Bar today. I have decide its time to clear out the fleet again, so I am putting my two main birds up for sale. I had more fun today, despite the wind, hucking my little Mini Titan SE around than anything else. I hope to have a new 50 size bird to review here shortly, and use as my primary 3D heli. This Year’s Event turned out to be a lot of fun, as usual. I wore myself ragged running back and forth to cover it every day for the the website here, but I am happy with how this event coverage has come together!
Saturday, September 19, 2009, Brooks, Oregon- Today dawned gloomy and rainy. The night flying last night (friday) was fantastic, but by midnight the clouds were looking ominous. For the first time in the events history breakfast was offered, and it was fantastic! By noon the rain had subsided and the day shaping up. I was tired and wanted to get home to get my pictures from last night up. I also decided to take a stab a putting a new clutch in my Sceadu, but I wanted to do it at home, instead of at the field.
Friday, September 18, 2009, Brooks, Oregon- The weather today was simply bliss for flying helis! We were treated to lots of great flying, and as usual, there was enough space for everyone to stretch out and do their thing. At some events, the space is a very limiting factor which makes it difficult to get in much flight time. At the Brooks Heli Fun Fly, we don’t have nearly the same limitations with approximately 2000 ft of grass runway to spread out on. The Freestyle 3D class was still going on with all of the technical issues the group had to overcome the last few days, but in the end everyone in the class got some flying in with the pros, and all is good. Jason Krause had a limited edition all aluminum colored head for his T-Rex 700; they will be available, but only for a limited time and only 500 are being made. Chris Quinby from ScaleRCHelis.com strapped my little Sony Webbie Camera to his 4 blade head E-Raptor. We made and attempt at shooting some aerial video of Mike Spinner’s MD 500, and we got a few cool shots. I managed to get a few flights in today on my Logo 600 V-Bar, but when I went to fire up my Hirobo Sceadu, I discovered I seemed to have broken the clutch, so that heli will probably be shelved for the rest of the weekend. I do have parts to fix it, so maybe I should just fix it out at the fun fly…. The weekend won’t be complete unless I burn some Nitro fuel! I was stuck in traffic driving home on I-5, the accident involved over 20 motorcylces and shut down the freeway entirely. More pictures coming tommorow, hold your breath the weather cooperates!
Thursday, September 17, 2009, Brooks, Oregon- Although morning fog and a little early drizzle hampered the mood early on, by mid-day the weather had shaped up nicely and was about as nice as you could ask for. A light breeze accompanied a brilliant blue sky by the early afternoon, and the flying began to get good. Jason Krause flew in from Arizona to participate, and the flight line began to fill in. Tammies Hobbies had their booth all together and business appeared to be cranking right off the bat! Dennis from DeeTeeEnterprises, this author’s former employer, was also at the show with a tent put together. Unfortunately, Dennis has had to close up the webstore recently, so he’s at the fun fly trying to clear out everything he has left at a discount. Patrick from KDE Direct was excited to show off his new T-Rex 700 electric conversion, which includes some exsquisite examples of good looking metal for the radio tray, motor mount, and Lower battery tray.
Todd Bennett and Matt Botos spent most of the day helping people of various skill levels with their helis. There were a few crashes during class, a Raptor 30, and a Vbar T-Rex 700, but the worse casualty was two HV 8717 servos on the Vbar T-Rex, they locked up and released their majic smoke in the crash. Sean Whitney ripped it up like usual after having to replace the rear bearing in his YS .91 SR last night. Nathan “Nate-Dog” Mallory is flying his T-Rex 500 better than ever, he has some very interesting moves and is getting much smoother, not to mention he is only 9 years old! The Scale guys from ScaleRCHelis.com weren’t doing much flying today with their imaculate machines, but they had everything set up like a home away from home. I’m sure more flying will take place throughout the event. I didn’t get a single flight in today, I was wrenching on friends helis, taking pictures and videos, and generally just hanging out. Before I knew it, it was getting late and I had to zip home to get this content up for you, my readers!
Wednesday, September 16, 2009, Brooks, Oregon- Our Bi-Annual Heli Fun Fly began today the arrival of two of sponsored pilots brought in to run a flight school. Todd Bennett and Matt Botos put together a comprehensive school for people who want the extra instruction. Click here to see Todd’s Website, Freestyle 3D. People also began showing up and putting their areas together before the rain hit. It looked like today was going to be fairly wet, maybe tomorrow will be too, but the weekend is forcast to be brighter. Russ McCutcheon stopped by to say hello in his RV-4. He flew home, but he’ll drive back for the weekend and will be flying a T-Rex 700. Russ has made an unofficial tradition of flying his RV-4 in before the feild gets very busy. Stay tuned, I’ll bring more updates tomorrow!

Wow! Great photos!!! I wish I was down there with my Sophisticated Lady. Keep me posted and I’ll make it for next year’s. -Chris
