FPV Flying With Sony Webbie HD Camera, Crash Caught On Film!

twinstar-ready-for-flightFirst Person Video (FPV) flying has really clicked my trigger. I usually get sucked into one thing or another and become obsessed with it until I figure it out. For me, the rush I get from this hobby is from new challenges, and the learning curve doesn’t come much steeper than trying to fly by video. Even with On Screen Displays (OSD) providing a “virtual cockpit,” and a head tracking gyro to make the camera follow your head movements, the challenge is daunting. First of all, you need a much bigger area that you would for normal RC. You don’t want obstacles you could hit or which could block your video signal. It might sound like a good idea at first to set up under the shade of a big old tree, but the tree may block your signal, and your line of sight if you need to control it by line of sight in an emergency. I say these things because I was having too much fun, and I had a problem! I was very comfortable in the shade of some nice trees. When my plane went above the trees, I lost video, and my spotters could not see it. By the time I got my video goggles off, my spotters had found the plane, but I was not able to regain visual contact before impact. The resulting video is a great example of how things can go wrong very quickly. Enjoy!

oh man. you should have cut the crash segment into a video of its own. I see it missed a rooftop in its spiral of death and finds a tree. what happened?
