Brooks Oregon RC Heli FunFly

dsc_0279-mediumJune 19, 20, 21 2009- Twice a year the Cascade Rotory Wings Club gets a chance to use a private grass airstrip for a fun fly. Located in the middle of a hops farm and a Rock quarry, the venue is remarkably well suited for a helicopter fun fly. With 88 registered pilots and big family groups, almost the entire length of the runway is turned into a makeshift campground/ flying field. Modelers can take advantage of 10 plus flight stations along the length of the strip, and we fly out over a crop which rotates from year to year. This year we were flying over wheat, and tempting as it might have been, we were asked to avoid cutting it with our rotor blades.

Sean Whitney Trex 700As in years past, food concessions were provided by Evlan Hubbard all three days. Club President and CD Russ McCutcheon did more of his usual mesmerizing flying throughout the weekend, his style is unique and incredibly smooth. Looking up and down the flight line, you were likely to see any number of up and coming hot shot pilots who all have come a long way. Sean Whitney wowed everyone with his aggressive style with lots of piro stops. Kenny McDonald is working on pirouetting flips with reversals. There were several Flybarless helicopters zipping around the sky at Brooks, and they were all incredibly fast, precise, and aggressive. Down at the North end of the field, the scale guys who operate ScaleRChelis.com were having a bit too much fun trying to fly formation; before the weekend was out they had a midair between two Hueys.

Tammies Hobbies, DeeTee Enterprises, FlexPro, KDE Direct, and High Tech Toys and Hobbies all had products on hand at the fun fly to show off and sell. Having the supplies these folks bring on hand makes it much easier to get a crashed heli back in the air before the weekend is out. The event has become so big there isn’t enough time for me to see everyone, and in the end it’s just a huge gathering of friends anyway, so we all say good by until the next fun fly.
